There’s something about stepping away from your routine—even for just a few days—that can reset everything.
For my birthday, I took a solo trip from Austin to San Antonio.
What I planned was a structured, culture-filled weekend. What I actually experienced was something softer—slower, more reflective, and honestly more meaningful than I expected.
This trip became less about checking things off a list…and more about giving myself permission to simply be.
📍 Quick Snapshot
Trip Type: Solo birthday trip
Duration: 4 days
Travel Style: Flexible + reflective
Best For: Solo women, soft reset trips
🚗 Getting There (Real Experience)
I left Austin around 4:15 PM on Friday after work, expecting a quick drive.
Traffic had other plans.
Drive to San Antonio: ~2.5 hours
Drive back to Austin (left ~2 PM): ~1.5 hours
👉 Tip: If you can, leave earlier. That small change makes a big difference.
🏨 Where to Stay
Hyatt Place
A simple, comfortable base to start the trip. Clean, quiet, and easy.
Holiday Inn Express
This ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip.
Spacious, clean rooms
A surprisingly good breakfast
And yes—the pancake machine was a highlight. 😄
It also had:
Eggs (scrambled + omelet)
Sausage
Yogurt
Hot chocolate (a must for me)
It wasn’t ultra-luxury, but it felt easy, calm, and comfortable.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
🗺️ Planned vs Actual Itinerary
I had a full itinerary planned.
But I didn’t follow all of it.
And honestly? That’s what made this trip better.
🌿 Tea Garden Moment (My Favorite)
Instead of rushing through plans, I slowed down and spent time at the Japanese Tea Garden.
I sat. I journaled. I allowed myself to just be present. No rush. No pressure.
I also tried mango boba tea for the first time—and surprisingly loved it.

This was one of the most peaceful moments of my entire trip.
🐎 Polo in the Park (Honest Experience)
This was my first time attending a polo event.
It’s free
It’s an annual event
But if I’m being honest… I didn’t enjoy it as much as I expected.
And that’s okay.
I’m still glad I went. Trying new things is part of the experience.
💡 If you go:
Bring a blanket or chair
Consider VIP for shade and comfort
Be ready for the heat
🏛️ Exploring the Alamo
I visited the Alamo during my trip, and it added a historical layer to the experience.

It’s a simple stop—but a meaningful one.
🎉 Birthday Highlight
My birthday itself unfolded exactly how I needed it to.
Calm. Intentional. Centered around me.
I spent the day:
Shopping
Going to the spa (75-minute massage—worth it)
And ending with dinner at Biga on the Banks

The dinner was incredible.
Elegant atmosphere
Floor-to-ceiling views of the river
Watching the river cruises pass by
But what stood out most was the service.
The waiter treated me with so much respect—it made the experience feel even more special.
👉 It felt like the perfect way to celebrate myself.
🍴 Food Notes
I had originally planned to dine at Southerleigh in the Pearl District.
But I kept things simple instead.
One night, I had a $9 steak fried rice from HEB.
And honestly?That’s real life.
Not every moment needs to be curated. And that’s part of what made this trip feel so genuine.
💭 My Experience
This trip taught me something important.
Not everything has to go according to plan for it to be perfect.
Some of my best moments came from:
Slowing down
Adjusting
Letting go of expectations
As a solo traveler, there’s something powerful about creating your own experience—without pressure.
And this trip reminded me of that.
📌 Things Worth Noting
San Antonio is perfect for a short, flexible trip
You don’t need a packed itinerary
Some experiences won’t meet expectations—and that’s okay
